1. (C) On May 3, econoff met with Brigadier General Helal
Uddin Ahmed, Director General of the Directorate General
Defence Procurement, the main procurement source for all
branches of the Bangladesh military, at Brigadier Helal's
request. Econoff had met with Helal in August 2006 to
deliver reftel demarche as well as to discuss several
outstanding commercial advocacy cases.
2. (C) Helal stated that current contracts with Iran would
not be cancelled, but that there would be no new contracts
for weapons or military equipment (such as radios). He gave
as a reason for this decision the GOB's strong desire to
maintain good relations with the USG.
