¶1. (SBU) At 1920 local, media reported that the caretaker
government under President Iajuddin Ahmed had authorized a
state of emergency. Embassy has confirmation from multiple
sources. Media reported that a night time curfew, 2300 to
0500 will be imposed beginning tonight, January 11, and
remain in effect until further notice. The curfew is for all
metropolitan areas and division capitals.
¶2. (SBU) As of 2030 local, the situation is calm. The
embassy convened an EAC meeting at 1900 and will have another
at 2100 (septel).
¶3. (SBU) President Ahmed is expected to address the nation in
a televised broadcast. Ahmed reportly will resign as Chief
Advisor. As of 2030 local, there is no reliable information
about a successor Chief Advisor.
¶4. (SBU) There has been no announcement of what role the
military will play during this state of emergency.
