1. (C) Police told embassy contacts that on February 28
former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mubarak Hussain was released
on bail from Dhaka Central Jail. The charge of violating
Bangladeshi immigrations laws for entering the country
without a passport is still pending. No trial date has been
set.
2. (SBU) Local TV media showed Hussain returning to his
village in Brahmyanbaria on March 1. He recounted his
arrest, detention, and release.
3. (SBU) In the past few weeks, the government has released
thousands of prisoners from overcrowded jails to make room
for additional arrests as part of a national crackdown on
corruption.
