SUBJECT: BANGLADESH SEEKS RE-ELECTION TO INTERNATIONAL
MARITIME ORGANIZATION COUNCIL
1. Bangladesh requests U.S. support in its bid for
re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
Council in Category B for the 2007-2008 term.
2. At the upcoming 25th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly
in London (23 November, 2007),Bangladesh will seek to be
re-elected to the IMO Council from Category B. Bangladesh's
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested U.S. support for
its re-election.
3. Bangladesh served on the IMO Council between 1981 and
1987, and since 2002 to the present. In support of its bid,
Bangladesh noted its leadership role in ship recycling,
promoting maritime education and safety, and protection of
the marine environment. In addition to a large domestic and
international fleet, the government of Bangladesh estimates
that approximately 10 million people work in Bangladesh in
the maritime industry. Among other facts, Bangladesh cites
that 90% of its trade is sea borne, and that it has a
dedicated Cabinet-level Minister for Shipping.
