SUBJECT: TANZANIA WELCOMES ZOELLICK WORLD BANK NOMINATION

1. (SBU) Ramadhani Khijjah, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the
Ministry of Finance, told Emboff that Tanzania welcomed the
nomination of Robert Zoellick to be President of the World
Bank. Khijjah noted Tanzania's keen interest in the affairs
of the World Bank, and the importance to Tanzania that the
Bank move beyond current obstacles in order to continue
pursuing its mission of promoting development.
2. (SBU) Khijjah expressed approval of both a change in
leadership at the World Bank in general, and of the
nomination of Mr. Zoellick in particular. In response to
Emboff highlighting Mr. Zoellick's credentials, Khijjah
expressed appreciation for Mr. Zoellick's experience as a
manager and a champion of development in Africa. He thanked
Emboff for providing background information on Mr. Zoellick,
and promised to relay the information to his superiors in the
Ministry of Finance.
