Summary: Syrian papers on Jan. 22 reported President Asad's and VP Shara's meetings with Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, on Jan 21. Papers also reported the visit to Damascus on Jan. 21 by Anne-Marie Lizin, President of the Belgian Senate, and her meeting with Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash. Headlines featured a press statement by Lizin upon her arrival in Damascus, in which she reiterated the importance of Syria's role at this critical stage, saying "there would be no good future for the region's peoples without Syria." "If Congress has ever taken a step in the right direction in its history, it is its demand that the President obtain approval for increasing the number of troops in Iraq and for attacking Iran.
