(C) Denmark strongly supports efforts to secure autonomous EU
sanctions against Iran at next week's GAERC ministerial,
senior Danish MFA officials and the prime minister's staff
assured us October 12. They noted that EU members had
reached agreement on a draft statement that endorses the
concept of such measures, albeit not as strongly worded as
the Danes had argued for and without references to timing.
Danish officials told us that the text will state that "the
EU will consider what additional measures it might take to
support the UN process" and will welcome the September 28
statement of the "EU3 3," implicitly endorsing additional
UNSC action. Denmark has been vocal with its EU colleagues
in supporting French leadership, they insisted, emphasizing
that Solana needs a strong and united EU behind him as he
deals with Tehran.
