1. (C) Ambassador spoke today with Foreign Secretary Palitha
Kohona to urge that Sri Lanka vote on May 17 in the UN
General Assembly for Bosnia and Slovenia -- and not for
Belarus -- as members of the UN Human Rights Council.
Several other western embassies also demarched the GSL on
this issue. Kohona confirmed Sri Lanka's support for
Slovenia and Bosnia, saying Sri Lanka wanted to be "counted
among the best on human rights" and seen as "one of the good
guys."
2. (C) Deputy Director for UN and Multilateral Affairs Satya
Rodrigo had previously informed Pol Off on May 15 that Sri
Lanka plans to support Bosnia in the UN Human Rights Council
election. However, it was not immediately clear that Sri
Lanka would support Slovenia as well, prompting Ambassador's
intervention to assure Sri Lanka's support for our candidates.
