E.O. 12958: DECL: 12/04/2012
TAGS: PREL PARM KNNP IR EG
SUBJECT: EGYPT ADVISED OF NIE ON IRAN
REF: STATE 162558
Classified By: Minister Counselor for Economic and Political
Affairs William R. Stewart for reasons 1.4(b) and (d).
(C) We discussed the points contained in reftel concerning
the updated NIE on Iran's nuclear program with MFA's
Disarmament Office Director Aly Sirry on December 5. Sirry
said that an official GOE comment may be forthcoming, but
noted that the fact that the U.S. updated and made public the
NIE is a "great testament to the strength of the U.S. system
and the uniquely self-correcting nature of the U.S. model of
democracy." He also expressed hope that the NIE would
provide a new opportunity for dialogue on Iran's program and
"calm the rhetoric that had dominated earlier discussions."
