SUBJECT: EGYPT'S POSITION ON BELARUS'S CANDIDATURE FOR UNHRC
REF: STATE 63445
Classified by Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone for reasons
1.4 (b) and (d).
1 (C) The Ambassador raised reftel points on Belarus's
candidature for the UNHRC on May 10 with Foreign Minister
Aboul Gheit. Aboul Gheit said that Egypt has not yet
received confirmation that the United States would support
Egypt's candidature for the UNHRC. If the U.S. supports
Egypt, Egypt will support the U.S. against Belarus. If not,
Egypt would "abstain or possibly support Belarus."
2. (C) Aboul Gheit said that getting a seat on the UNHRC is
"a serious matter for Egypt and it is campaigning for every
vote." Aboul Gheit claimed that the GOE had made clear in
Washington and New York its request for USG support for its
candidature.
