1. (C) The Slovak Government recently announced its intent to
withdraw by the end of the year the last two Slovak soldiers
deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The
bulk of Slovak forces were withdrawn from Iraq, pursuant to
Prime Minister Fico's 2006 campaign pledge, in February 2007.
The GOS has made clear that it intends to focus its overseas
deployments in three operations: ISAF, KFOR and UNIFIL. The
likelihood of a future deployment of Slovak forces to Iraq
under the current government is nil. Post will continue to
encourage Slovakia to consider other avenues of bilateral
assistance to Iraq.
