TAGS: PREL PHUM UNSC BM LO
SUBJECT: SLOVAKIA WANTS TO SUPPORT BURMA RESOLUTION
REF: SECSTATE 1060
Classified By: Charge d'Affaires Lawrence R. Silvermna for reasons 1.4
(b) and (d).
(C) Slovak Deputy Foreign Minister Diana Strofova told Charge
in response to reftel demarche that although Slovakia was
obliged to first discuss its position with EU colleagues, the
GOS wanted to support the US draft UNSC resolution on Burma.
Strofova agreed that it was important to demonstrate UNSC
backing of U/SYG Gambari's efforts through a resolution as
opposed to a Presidential Statement, and promised close
consultation between our delegations in New York. Charge
asked that the GOS seek to complement US efforts to get
Russia and China at least to abstain on a resolution.
Strofova's deputy for UN affairs noted that the Russian
Embassy had approached him about ten days ago to urge the
Slovaks to help avoid a resolution.
