SUBJECT: COLOMBIA REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR CANDIDATE FOR
INTERAMERICAN JUDICIAL COMMITTEE
1. This is an action request (see paragraphs 2 and 4).
2. We received a request from the Colombian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs for support for their candidate for the
Interamerican Judicial Committee of the Organization of
American States, Guillermo Fernandez de Soto. A copy of the
request and a biography will be faxed to WHA/AND and
WHA/USOAS.
3. Begin informal Embassy translation of MFA letter:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, office of multilateral
political issues, cordially greets the United States Embassy
to Colombia and refers to its note verbal DPM/CAI No. 65789
of November 9, 2006 in which it requested support of your
government for the candidacy of Dr. Guillermo Fernandez de
Soto for the Interamerican Judicial Committee in the
elections that will be held at the thirty-seventh General
Assembly of the OAS that will be held in Panama in June of
2007.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, office of multilateral
political issues, wishes to refer to the peaceful ties of
cooperation between our two countries and reiterate the
request for support of the government of the United States of
America for the aforementioned candidate.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, office of multilateral
political issues, values the chance to reiterate to the
honorable embassy of the United States of AMERICA its
assurances of the highest consideration.

4. Please advise of USG position on the request, or time
frame in which decision will be made, so that it may be
communicated to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
