SUBJECT: China Requests Date Change for UN ESCAP Meeting to May,
2008
1. (SBU) Mr. Geng Shuang, MFA Director of the Department of
International Organizations and Conferences, called Embassy to
request the United States support the Chinese sponsored change of
date for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asi
and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) meeting to May 8-3, 2008. The Chinese
have difficulties with the originally proposed dates in March during
which time they will be attending the Mekong Sb-Regional Meeting
held in Laos.
2. (SBU) South Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Burma
support the change. Japan is currently considering the change
according to Geng.
3. ACTION REQUEST: Please let post know if the USG supports the
change of date.
