FORWARD" ON IRAN
REF: 9/13 EAP/CM EMAIL TO EMBASSY
Classified By: Ambassador Clark T. Randt, Jr. Reasons 1.4 (b/d).
1. (C) In a September 14 meeting requested by Foreign
Minister Yang Jiechi on other subjects (see septels),the
Ambassador, drawing from talking points contained in ref
e-mail, stressed our joint commitment to a two-track
resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. In addition to the
IAEA effort, work on the second track increasing UN Security
Council pressure on Iran, specifically through the adoption
of a third UNSC resolution, must continue without delay. The
Ambassador urged China's cooperation.
2. (C) FM Yang responded with the standard Chinese talking
points: that China takes the Iran nuclear issue very
seriously, that there is no difference between U.S. and
Chinese strategic objectives on this score. The parties
involved "need to study and discuss the best way forward to
peacefully resolve the crisis, safeguard the international
nuclear non-proliferation regime, and promote peace and
stability in the region."
3. (SBU) Yang added that China will send a representative to
the upcoming P5-plus-1 meeting in Washington, but he did not
specify who the representative will be.
