SUBJECT: PAKISTANIS FEARING DEPORTATION HIDE OUT AT UNHCR
REF: BEIJING EXDIS 3773
Classified By: Acting Political Minister Counselor Robert Griffiths.
Reasons 1.4 (b/d).
(S) Upwards of twenty Pakistanis in the process of obtaining
UNHCR refugee status are "hiding out" at UNHCR's Beijing
office during the day because they fear Chinese authorities
will find and deport them if they stay at home, according to
UNHCR Senior Regional Protection Officer Lam Naijit.
Attending an unrelated meeting at UNHCR on June 8, Poloffs
noted that many Pakistani families, including small babies,
were camped out in the UNHCR elevator lobby area, crowded
onto the floor. Having heard that China deported five
Pakistanis while UNHCR was in the process of determining
their refugee status, other Pakistanis who have not yet been
granted refugee status believe staying at UNHCR during the
day is safer than staying at home, Lam said. In the evening,
when the UNHCR office closes, they return to their homes, he
noted, emphasizing that UNHCR is working as quickly as
possible to make status determinations for this group of
Pakistanis.
