1. (C) Poloff expressed concern to MFA Human Rights
officer Xu Jing on March 5 over reports that Rebiya
Kadeer's son Ablikim, who awaits sentencing in
Xinjiang Province on charges of subverting state power
and ethnic separatism, is in critically poor health
and urgently needs medical treatment. Poloff
emphasized that the United States Government,
including members of Congress, are closely monitoring
Ablikim's case and the cases of Rebiya Kadeer's other
adult sons Alim and Kahar. Poloff urged the Chinese
Government to ensure that Ablikim's rights are
protected and that he receives necessary medical
treatment. Citing concerns that the Kadeer cases
involve retribution, Poloff again urged the MFA to
provide information on the legal cases brought against
Rebiya Kadeer's family members, as requested reftel.
2. (C) Xu said she will report the United States
Government's message to her superiors. Xu said that
the MFA would try to provide information about cases
involving Kadeer's sons, but had to depend on other
ministries in obtaining such information. Poloff
urged the MFA to make the cases against Rebiya
Kadeer's family a high priority in this regard.
