(SBU) Ambassador made reftel demarche to Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary William Joof (Deputy Formin equivalent), stressing the imperative of strong pressure by the international community on Iran, via full, effective implementation of UNSCR 1737, to prevent its acquisition of a nuclear weapons capability. Ambassador also outlined steps by the U.S. to implement UNSCR 1737. Joof took note of our demarche, but made no substantive comment. ¶2. (SBU) We will report any substantive GOTG reaction and continue to seek opportunities to impress upon GOTG officials and the private sector the crucial importance of implementing UNSCR 1737 and of denying Iran a nuclear weapons capability.
