1. (U) Having previously provided Thai Ministry of Foreign
Affairs International Organizations Department with updated
information associated with the United Nations General
Assembly resolution on "Eliminating the Use of Rape and Other
Forms of Sexual Violence as Instruments to Achieve Political
or Military Objectives," we called on the Counselor of the
Social Division of the Department of International
Organizations, Sirilak Niyom, on November 14 and made the
points outlined in reftel.
2. (C) Sirilak advised that Thailand supported the resolution
in principle but had not yet finalized its decision on
co-sponsorship of the resolution. Sirilak said Thailand's
representatives at the United Nations Mission in New York
were waiting to review the final draft of the resolution and
to hear the views of other countries. Sirilak had not yet
received any specific comments from the Thai officials in New
York on the revised resolution, but agreed to take the U.S.
position into consideration.
