1. (SBU) Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has canceled his
appointments this week and checked into the hospital.
Officials have told the press that the PM is just getting a
routine physical exam, However, we have heard from Council
for National Security (CNS) contacts that the PM felt unwell
following his trip to Japan, and went to the hospital for
tests; he will reportedly have a colonoscopy and be checked
for calcium in his heart.
2. (C) COMMENT: The news has provoked another round of
speculation that the PM will resign. His popularity ratings
continue to slide, and the working relationship between the
PM and the coup leaders in the CNS appears somewhat strained.
We note that this rumor has been around for weeks, and is
likely to persist, regardless of the state of the PM's
health.
