Poloff delivered reftel demarche on November 5 to Askar Shokabayev,
head of the office for Middle East and African Affairs at the
Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Shokabayev was noncommittal
concerning the specific action items in reftel, but agreed to review
the information from the FATF. He reiterated that Kazakhstan has
appealed to Iran to comply with the UN Security Council resolutions
and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He said
that Kazakhstan will continue to pursue this position with Iran, and
is generally supportive of USG diplomatic initiatives on these
issues.
ORDWAY
