1. (s) Ambassador conveyed message in reftel to Turkish
D/CHOD Gen. Saygun during a meeting October 16. Saygun
appreciated the follow up and said he will be in touch with
the Turkish Air Force and others regarding US plans for
overflights closer to the Iraq-Turkey border. He made no
further mention of his request in August for Turkey to be
able to fly such missions.
2.(s) As these missions proceed, it will be critically
important to ensure that there is affirmative action to
ensure the Turks are aware of them in advance so as to
preclude any misunderstanding. Prompt relay of the relevant
information these flights provide will also be helpful.
