RECRUITING IRAQI TEACHERS IN JORDAN
REF: A. BAGHDAD 3585
B. HALE-BUTENIS EMAILS
Classified By: Ambassador Hale for Reasons 1.4(b) and (d)
1. (C) Embassy Amman welcomes the upcoming visit to Jordan of
Multi-national Force Iraq (MNF-I) Deputy Commanding General
for Detainee Operations MG Stone (ref A). Post strongly
supports MNF-I's efforts to rehabilitate young Iraqis
detained for insurgent activities.
2. (C) As noted ref B and reported previously, there is great
GOJ sensitivity about easing entry restrictions for Iraqis,
and even sharper reactions about granting Iraqis residency
rights. Gaining the temporary entry into Jordan for Iraqis
of particular interest to Embassy Baghdad because of their
USG association, for Iraqis eligible for Special Immigrant
Visas, and for Iraqis of special interest to several parts of
the USG (because of training programs, humanitarian medical
needs, scientist redirection, and other categories),has
required Post intervention at the highest levels here.
Jordanian readiness to comply with these requests and others
is finite.
