(C) On July 29 Ambassador shared reftel draft statement with
Bassem Awadallah, director of King Abdullah's office, who
endorsed it without further comment. Also on July 29
polcouns passed the draft to Thamer Adwan, director of
Foreign Minister Khatib's private office. Adwan told
polcouns July 30 that Khatib had spoken with "several Gulf
foreign ministers" (he could not say which ones),and that
these Gulf FMs do not want to address the details of the
Palestinian issue in the statement, preferring simply to
express support for President Abbas and stress the importance
of establishing a Palestinian state. Adwan also noted
approvingly that the draft statement did not contain any
reference to the roadmap, calling it "controversial." (Note:
Adwan's view of the roadmap is not representative of GOJ
policy. End note.)
