C O N F I D E N T I A L AMMAN 003204 SIPDIS SIPDIS FOR NEA AND S/I E.O. 12958: DECL: 07/29/2017 TAGS: PREL PGOV JO SUBJECT: JORDANIAN REACTION TO DRAFT GCC+2 JOINT STATEMENT REF: SECSTATE 104838 Classified By: Ambassador David Hale for reasons 1.4(b) and (d). (C) On July 29 Ambassador shared reftel draft statement with Bassem Awadallah, director of King Abdullah's office, who endorsed it without further comment. Also on July 29 polcouns passed the draft to Thamer Adwan, director of Foreign Minister Khatib's private office. Adwan told polcouns July 30 that Khatib had spoken with "several Gulf foreign ministers" (he could not say which ones),and that these Gulf FMs do not want to address the details of the Palestinian issue in the statement, preferring simply to express support for President Abbas and stress the importance of establishing a Palestinian state. Adwan also noted approvingly that the draft statement did not contain any reference to the roadmap, calling it "controversial." (Note: Adwan's view of the roadmap is not representative of GOJ policy. End note.) Hale
