(SBU) Ambassador used the opportunity of previously
scheduled meetings on June 17 to raise U.S. concerns in
reftel, and supposed Jordanian support for the International
Drug Purchase Facility (UNITAID),with Foreign Minister
Abdelelah Al-Khatib. FM Khatib was generally aware of the
proposal, but reiterated that such a tax required legislative
action the GOJ was not interested in pursuing. Subsequent to
the Ambassador's discussions, an MFA official advised poloff
that a draft law, which included the proposed tax, had been
pending with Parliament for some time, and showed no signs of
movement. If the bill were reintroduced, it would be easy to
strike the ticket tax language. Post will monitor the
situation and report any further developments.
