ARAB LEAGUE AUDIO-VISUAL COMMITTEE AS DISCUSSION VENUE
REF: A. STATE 84112
B. 06 AMMAN 9101
Classified By: Ambassador David Hale for reasons 1.4(b) and (d)
(C) The Ambassador raised on June 15 ref A points with
Government of Jordan Spokesman Nasser Judeh, who will attend
part of the June 20-24 Arab League Ministers of Information
meeting (Jordan has no Minister of Information). Judeh
commented that Jordan does not have sufficient influence on
the ArabSat board to press for the removal of Al-Zawraa and
Al-Manar. Jordan no longer sits on the ArabSat board and has
a 4% stake in the company (ref B). Judeh also questioned the
Information Ministers meeting as an appropriate venue for
discussion of ArabSat programming, thinking it will be
difficult to get the item on the agenda. Expressing
commitment to pursuing the issue, he proposed the AL
Audio-Visual Committee as a forum. The Ambassador also
raised the matter with Foreign Minister Abdelelah al Khatib
on June 17, who shared our goals, but who was not optimistic
we would meet them.
