1. (S) The GOJ is currently informed of
existing USG programs for Iraqi WMD scientist redirection
described reftel. GOJ institutions have been accepting Iraqi
scientists for short-term and one-year training programs
since 2005. These programs have been operating with GOJ
knowledge and in partnership with host country institutions,
including universities. Post understands that State/ISN has
been working with the Civilian Research and Development
Foundation to implement several short-term training courses
and longer-term fellowships for Iraqi scientists in Jordan,
and that these programs will continue into the future on a
similar basis. These programs have been implemented with
Jordanian partners such as the Jordan University of Science
and Technology, the Cooperative Monitoring Center and the
Royal Scientific Society. Princess Sumaya, President of the
Royal Scientific Society, indicated to Ambassador on June 10
that these programs have been approved by the Ministry of
Education and are running smoothly to date. Other senior
Jordanian officials at these institutions report likewise in
meetings with Emboffs.
