1. As expected, the GOJ announced that municipal elections
will be held July 17 (reftel). The April 18 announcement
follows the Parliament's passage in March of a reformed
municipal government law. As required under the new law, the
Council of Ministers dissolved current municipal councils on
April 17 and 18, and will appoint temporary governing
committees to oversee each municipality until the new
councils are elected.
2. The Ministry of Municipalities also published in the
official gazette April 18, the new allocation of council
seats to each town, along with the quota for women on each
council. The breakdown for the larger municipalities was:
Irbid ) 30 members ( of which six must be women)
Kerak ) 23 members (5 women)
Zarqa ) 17 members (4 women)
Salt ) 17 members (4 women)
Tafileh ) 17 members (4 women)
Madaba ) 14 members (3 women)
Rusaifeh ) 14 members (3 women)
Ma'an ) 12 members (3 women)
Ajloun ) 12 member (3 women)
Mafraq ) 12 members (3 women)
