1. (C) The status of the ruling PDP party Presidential
candidate Umaru Yar'Adua remains unclear. Rumors of his
death have slowed, but the best confirmation of his status
comes from a BBC telephonic interview conducted with him at a
hospital in Germany.
2. (C) German sources report that Yar'Adua was alive at
noon local time, which fits with the BBC timeline.
Speculation remains a popular sport in Nigeria, so until some
audible or visible confirmation of his condition and his
actual status, if alive, is available, more rumors can be
expected.
3. (C) COMMENT: While it appears that he is alive, the
political implications are many. Whether or not he can be
substituted on the yet-to-be released candidate's list and
whether or not this merits a delay in elections are two legal
issues guaranteed to engender much discussion over the coming
days.
