1. (C) Ambassador-designate Jerko Vukas, MFA Assistant
Minister for Multilateral Affairs Pjer Simunovic, and another
MFA official will travel to Baghdad for three days sometime
between July 23 and August 1, Simunovic told DCM June 29.
The GOC has been working with the Polish government, which
has generously agreed to support all logistics and security
requirements for the visit. The Iraqi ambassador in Warsaw
has agreed to try to facilitate Vukas' presentation of
credentials to the president; exact timing of the visit
depends on when the credentials ceremony could happen.
2. (C) The Croatian delegation hopes to see the Iraqi
President, new Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, the oil
ministry, the economic ministry, the US embassy, the US
military (for a security briefing),and the European
Commission representation, Simunovic said. The Polish
embassy in Baghdad will help arrange the meetings with the
Iraqis, he said; however, he asked Embassy Zagreb to notify
Embassy Baghdad of the requests for meetings with it and the
US military.
3. (C) Vukas would not be resident in Baghdad at this point,
Simunovic said, due to the cost of maintaining security
there.
