1. (C) PolExt Chief delivered reftel demarche December 1 to
Krzysztof Plominski, Acting Director of MFA Middle
East/Africa Department. Plominski acknowledged the U.S.
position and expressed similar concerns over the undemocratic
candidate selection process for Assembly of Experts and the
"circular nature" of the Iranian electoral system. However,
he did note that President Ahmedinijad had won by a wide
margin in relatively free and fair elections, suggesting that
one should not be overly optimistic regarding the will of the
Iranian electorate.
