1. (C) Ambassador delivered reftel announcement orally to
Director-General of Europe-Americas Department Southam
Sakhonhninhom this afternoon, emphasizing the need for the
GoL to issue a public statement of support for the U.S.
initiative and to use whatever contacts it might have with
the Iranian government to encourage the Iranians to suspend
enrichment activities.
2. (C) DG Southam thanked Ambassador for the message, but
noted that Laos' relations with Iran are not close. While
the two countries have diplomatic relations, there is no
resident Ambassador in either country. Southam, in fact, was
unsure whetherQ8wnQa-Pacific
Department, but we doubt the Lao will issue a statement. A
better approach in this case would be through the Lao
Ambassador to the UN.
