1. Economic-Political Counselor and Poloff delivered reftel
demarche on August 28 to Dr. Helmut Tichy, Head of the MFA's
International Law Division. Tichy confirmed that he was
aware of Michael Matheson's candidacy for re-election to the
ILC. He noted Matheson's strong credentials for the
position. However, he said he was not in a position to
comment on Austrian support for the candidacy. Tichy said
that he would study the issue and consult with his colleagues
in Vienna and in New York. He suggested that we consult
further with the Austrian Mission to the UN.
