USUN received a letter dated 30 June 2006 from the UN's Department of Safety and Security (DSS),soliciting contributions to the Trust Fund for Security of Staff Members of the United Nations System. Begin text of letter: The Secretariat of the United Nations presents its compliments to the Permanent Mission of the United States of America to the United Nations and has the honor to bring to its attention paragraph 27 of resolution 60/123 adopted on 15 December 2005, wherein the General Assembly "...encourages all States to contribute to the Trust Fund for Security of Staff Members of the United Nations System". The Trust Fund for security of staff members of the United Nations system has been an indispensable tool that has allowed the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) to proactively implement essential programmes to promote the security of the UN community in the field when no regular funding was available. The Trust Fund was at the genesis of several successful projects that are now integral parts of the Department's programme of work, all of which would not have been possible without the generous contribution received from Member States through the Trust Fund. The budget of the United Nations and UN system agencies, funds and programmes has provided the UN Department of Safety and Security with vital support that has allowed it to work toward the provision of staff safety in approximately 150 countries in which the UN undertakes field operations. Nevertheless, there continue to be critical requirements to further ensure the security of United Nations personnel and associated humanitarian workers, which is essential to the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
