The SC Committee on Admission of New Members met June 20 to consider the application of Montenegro for membership in the United Nations. The Committee recommended that the Council adopt a resolution recommending that Montenegro be admitted to UN membership. On June 21, the Council adopted the resolution without a vote as SC resolution 1691 (2006) (para 2). The President of the Council made a statement on behalf of the members of the Council (para 2). Pursuant to Article 4 of the Charter, the General Assembly must now take action to admit Montenegro to membership. ¶2. Begin text. SC Resolution 1691 (2006). "The Security Council, "Having examined the application of the Republic of Montenegro for admission to the United Nations (A/60/890-S/2006/409), "Recommends to the General Assembly that the Republic of Montenegro be admitted to membership to the United Nations." End Text. Begin text. Statement by the President of the Security Council on admission of the Republic of Montenegro. The Security Council has decided to recommend to the General Assembly that the Republic of Montenegro be admitted as a Member of the United Nations. On behalf of the members of the Security Council, I wish to extend my congratulations to the Republic of Montenegro on this historic occasion. The Council notes with great satisfaction the Republic of Montenegro's solemn commitment to uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and to fulfil all the obligations contained therein. We look forward to the Republic of Montenegro joining us as a Member of the United Nations and to working closely with its representatives. End text. BOLTON
