(U) In response to Ref A points, MOFA UN Policy Division
Deputy Director Aya Yoshida told POLOFF on February 14 that
the Japanese will support a candidate from the "Asian
community," but is not leaning toward any particular
candidate at this point. Yoshida named Sri Lanka, Thailand,
and South Korea as the three countries whose candidates Japan
currently is evaluating, but stressed that there is still
much time for people "to maneuver" between now and the
elections. What's important, Yoshida continued, is that the
next Secretary General be strong enough to carry out
management reform and ably run the institution. Yoshida's
sentiments echo the earlier comments of her boss, Director
Kazutoshi Aikawa (per Ref B).
