demarche on November 1 to MOFA Arms Control and Disarmament
Division Principle Deputy Director Nobuharu Imanishi, urging
Japan to put forward a candidate for Asia,s Group slot as
UNDC Vice-Chairman. Imanishi expressed surprise that the
Asia Group might nominate its regional candidate as early as
November 1 and promised to consult with Japan representatives
in New York. Japan would support another candidate if a
country besides Iran fields an alternative, Imanishi
indicated. He shared concerns about UNDC effectiveness and
emphasized Tokyo,s commitment to diplomatic efforts to
promote nonproliferation.
