August 16 to MOFA International Peace Cooperation Division
Deputy Director Ryo Nakamura. Nakamura acknowledged receipt
of the same demarche in New York, and explained that Japan
would not be able make any immediate contribution to UNIFIL.
Legislative barriers, domestic political problems and
technical force projection difficulties would all need to be
overcome before Japan could commit any kind of assistance to
the UN force. Japan is sensitive to the urgency of the
situation in Lebanon, and would make its decision as quickly
as possible, said Nakamura.
