Deputy Director Yoriko Suzuki August 10. Suzuki said that
Japan would definitely support U.S. candidate Dr. Ruth
Wedgwood for reelection to the UN Human Rights Committee on
September 7 if the United States supports the Japanese
candidate, Dr. Yuji Iwasawa. Suzuki understood during
earlier conversations with Embassy Tokyo Political Officers
(reftel B) that the United States cannot agree to reciprocal
support, but she emphasized that Japan is expecting that the
United States will indeed support Dr. Iwasawa.
