Counselor contacted MOFA UN Policy Division Principal Deputy
Director Kitamura on Sunday, August 6 to discuss the UNSC
resolution on Lebanon. Drawing from reftel talking points,
she urged Japan's prompt support for the resolution.
Kitamura explained that he had already discussed the
resolution with Japan's Mission to the UN and with others in
the Ministry in Tokyo. While the draft required some further
discussion before a final decision was reached, Japan in
principle supported the resolution. He did not expect Japan
to raise minor issues that could delay a vote. Japan's
primary objective, he stressed, was to pass the resolution as
quickly as possible in order to send a strong message to the
international community.
