1. (U) This message contains an Action Request. See para 3
below.
2. (C) Following reftel instructions, Embassy Tokyo
Political Officer contacted MOFA UN Policy Division Director
Shigeki Takizaki July 31 to discuss Japan's position on the
reftel para 6 draft UNSC resolution. Takizaki assured us
that Japan's Mission to the UN had already conveyed Japan's
support for the draft to the U.S. Mission. In that context,
Takizaki observed that at the moment only France and the
United Kingdom are co-sponsoring the resolution. Japan is
also considering co-sponsoring the resolution but some MOFA
officials are wondering why the United States is not
co-sponsoring, also. Takizaki asked that we inquire why the
U.S. is not co-sponsoring.
3. (C) ACTION REQUEST. Please provide current status of
co-sponsorship of the UNSC resolution on Iran and, if
possible, prospects for U.S. co-sponsorship.
