1. "Top Priority Should be Given to Improved Security"
The top-circulation, moderate Yomiuri editorialized
(5/23): "A permanent Iraqi government has finally been
launched after much delay. The political process
stipulated in a UN Security Council resolution has
basically been completed. Nevertheless, an occasion that
should have been celebrated was greeted by disinterest on
the part of the Iraqi people, as the new government,
which is looking to create a stable democracy, begins in
an extremely difficult situation.
2. "The new government should give top priority to
improving the security situation, which remains dire. To
do so, it will have to bring about reconciliation among
various sectarian and ethnic groups. Until these problems
are solved, the Iraqi people's hopes for stability and
economic reconstruction will never be realized....
Support from the US and other nations in improving
security and the economy is a precondition for drawing up
an 'exit strategy.'"
