(U) In response to reftel demarche, on May 15 the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Human Rights Division's Takashi Hamada
informed Post that Japan shares the U.S. view on the
importance of the UN Democracy Fund and its agenda. Japan is
planning on contributing to the UNDEF, Hamada said, but as of
May 15 has not been able to reach a decision as to what
amount it will give nor specifically how it will be budgeted.
