(U) Japan fully intends to support only candidates for the
Human Rights Council that have a genuine commitment to human
rights, MOFA Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Deputy
Director Noriko Tanaka told PolOff during an April 17
meeting. Ms. Tanaka added that the Japanese government has
not yet decided which candidates to support, other than
itself. Ms. Tanaka promised to pass the Secretary's letter
(reftel) to her Foreign Minister.
