SUBJECT: NETHERLANDS/BMENA: FM BOT NOT PLANNING TO ATTEND
THIRD FORUM FOR THE FUTURE
REF: STATE 189502
1. (SBU) Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot is currently not/not
planning to attend the November 30 - December 1 Forum for the
Future (FFF) meeting at the Dead Sea, according to Roger van
Laak, Senior Policy Officer at the Dutch MFA's Department of
Middle East and North African Affairs. Van Laak told
POLCOUNS on November 22 that Bot had originally hoped to
attend the meeting, but was compelled to change his plans as
the result of this week's national elections and other
obligations, including the Riga NATO summit. Van Laak said
the Netherlands would most likely be represented at the
meeting either by Baroness Henriette van Lynden, Director of
the MFA's Department of Middle East and North African
Affairs, or by Ambassador-at-Large Michiel den Hond.
2. (SBU) Drawing from reftel, POLCOUNS stressed the
importance of ministerial-level attendance at the upcoming
meeting and noted that Secretary Rice planned to participate
on December 1. Van Laak promised to share these points with
the Foreign Minister and to let us know if his plans changed.
