(C) UNHCR's Protection Officer Asako Nozawa told Poloff that
the UNHCR is closing today. On April 11 the Uzbek Mission to
the United Nations in New York delivered a note verbale to UN
headquarters agreeing to UNDP's proposal to assume some of
UNHCR's responsibilities (reftel). Nozawa told Poloff that
Secretary General Kofi Annan had intervened to support the
SIPDIS
UNDP proposal. Nozawa added that four local UNHCR staff
members will continue working in Tashkent, while she will
relocate to Bishkek. Head of Mission Abdul Karim Ghoul told
Poloff he is definitely leaving the region and has no plans
to return.
