(C) Following the GOU's decision to shut the UNHCR office
(reftel),UNHCR's Protection Officer told Poloff that Chief
of Mission Abdul Karim Ghoul has submitted a proposal to
UNHCR headquarters suggesting that UNDP assume the office's
responsibilities. The Protection Officer noted that UNDP's
Resident Coordinator usually handles refugee-related issues
in countries without a UNHCR office. The Protection officer
added that she expects a response from UNHCR headquarters
within the next three days.
