(C) In a March 15 meeting with the Ambassador, ROK Acting
Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan confirmed a recent informal
statement by Foreign Minister Ban to the Ambassador that the
ROK would support Guatemala's candidacy in the 2006 UNSC
election. The ROKG, Yu said, had made a commitment to
support Guatemala. This commitment was linked to Guatemala's
support for the ROK candidacy in the UNSC and ECOSOC, Yu
said. The Ambassador encouraged the South Korean side to
also try to bring around other countries, especially those in
Asia, to support Guatemala over Venezuela.
