(U) On April 7, poloff delivered ref a demarche, announcing
that the USG had decided not to run for the UN Human Rights
Council, to Jang Hyun-cheol, Deputy Director of the Human
Rights and Social Affairs Division at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Trade. Jang said that the ROKG had submitted its
candidate for the council via its Mission in Geneva and was
currently pursuing negotiations with capitals around the
world for their support. Pointing out that the Asian region
had 13 vacancies and already 17 candidates, he opined that
the seats would be competitive.
